INTRODUCTION TO CALLIGRAPHY
Release your inner creative in our Introduction to calligraphy workshop run by Edinburgh artist Panna Chauhan. We offer two options: foundational calligraphy or italic calligraphy.
Calligraphy is an art form lasting over centuries. Even in its simplest form it can look beautiful, and it is an art form that can be learned...with patience.
You will begin with a short introduction to the basics of calligraphy including the different types of nibs, correct sizing of letters and how to hold the pen with the right tension to achieve a fluid letter. You will practice letter forms in either the 'foundational' or 'italic' hand depending on which workshop option you choose, and create a calligraphy piece to take home and inspire you to keep practising.
You will then apply your newly acquired writing skills to creating a more abstract calligraphy piece, where you can be creative and inventive, letting the letters flow in a direction that feels right. You will have the option of creating your abstract calligraphy piece onto paper, which you will then frame ready to take home; or onto a small piece of silk using gold or silver markers, which you will then colour in using silk paints which will also give you a taster of how silk painting works.
Refreshment breaks - featuring locally sourced products - are an important part of The Arienas Collective experience. We are fortunate to have a fantastic range of independent shops and producers nearby who we love to support.
You will start the day with a welcome coffee served with biscuits, and our buffet-style lunches feature summer platters or warming winter soup with bread and cheese. Our breaks allow time to socialise, make new friends, and chat to the artists.
Our artists will support you throughout the day offering one-to-one guidance and tips on design, as well as encouraging collaboration through sharing of ideas within the group. They will do their best to answer any questions you may have.
The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a supportive and welcoming home environment in the Edinburgh New Town. Spaces are limited so our artists can offer hands-on help and support. All equipment is provided, as are all the materials you will need. Just turn up, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in creating something unique.
The price for the day includes all materials, coffee, tea, lunch and of course you get to take all the products your have created home to enjoy and inspire you, or to give to family and friends as unique gifts.
Please note: The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a first-floor open plan reception room and unfortunately we do not have lift access. Please let us know of any skin or food allergies when booking.
