FOR LOVE OR MONEY?

How do creatives balance making work they are passionate about and work they earn a living from?

Our first-ever Arienas Collective exhibition is taking place in Gallery 1 at Scot-ART St Margaret's House in Edinburgh from Saturday, 24 May - Saturday, 31 May 2025.

We will explore how creatives balance making art to earn a living with making art they love.

The exhibition will feature original artworks alongside live demonstrations, taster workshops and talks.

There will also be opportunities to chat to creative team members who will be working from the exhibition space for the duration of the exhibition.

We look forward to welcoming you!

THEME

For love or money?

I set up The Arienas Collective to support local artists and makers to earn a living by sharing their creative passions and skills with others through delivering in-person workshops.

As with other professions, artists and makers should be paid in line with their qualifications, skills and experience. However, this is still not always the case.

I'm aware how tricky it is for creatives to balance making the art they love and that challenges their own practice, with paying the bills. Many have second - or even third - jobs in unrelated areas, through offering them a space where they can deliver creative workshops, I hope they can earn a living that aligns with their creative values.

This exhibition explores how members of The Arienas Collective Creative Team manage the challenge through bringing together a display of their original artworks, alongside taster workshops, talks and working from the exhibition space.

I hope the exhibition will showcase/inspire conversations around the current dilemmas of those working within the creative industries, and perhaps offer some solutions for those considering running workshops themselves.

EXHIBITORS

Eight members of our Creative Team will be exhibiting finished artworks

Anna Campbell

Anna is a specialist in silver clay and one of the UK's leading instructors. Inspired by a school trip to Central St Martin's, Anna finally found herself making and teaching silver clay jewellery, with commissioned pieces worn by famous actors, supermodels and composers.

Panna Chauhan

Panna is a multi-disciplinary artist specialising in calligraphy and art installations. Being taught calligraphy at an early age led to immersing herself in words, books and letters. Her artwork is influenced by her love of the written word, and incorporates her poetry.

Jacky Cox

Jacky has been making mosaics for over 20 years. She loves the process of creating an image from glass, tiles and china - in fact anything that can be stuck down!

Lou Davis

Lou is an artist and printmaker who loves circles and patterns. You can see these themes and motifs repeated throughout her work whether it’s limited edition screen prints embellished with gold leaf, or abstract paintings where the soft textures of watercolour are used to soften rigid geometric forms.

Morven Ferguson

Morven Ferguson is an artist and printmaker living in Edinburgh. Morven graduated with a Fine Art BA Hons degree from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee in 2021. She went on to achieve a Masters in Fine Art in 2022. Morven is a member of Edinburgh printmakers where she continues to develop and refine her printmaking. She is drawn to wild and awe inspiring Scottish landscapes.

Suzanne Kemplay

Suzanne graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1988 with a BA (Hons) degree in Drawing & Painting. On leaving college Suzanne set up a studio painting commissioned portraits and then travelled, living in California and London before returning to Edinburgh. In recent years she has ventured beyond Still Life and Portraiture to explore landscapes.

Mark Kirkham

Mark draws things that catch his eye, finding pleasing compositions in everyday life. He works mostly in ink and watercolour, creating quick sketches of the world around him.

Sheila McDonald

Sheila works with vitreous enamels on metal. Inspired by her love of colour and drawing, her work draws on influences from Charles Rennie Mackintosh's watercolours, and the work of Phoebe Anna Traquair.

Lucy Wayman

Lucy is a Welsh-born artist based in Edinburgh. Her practice combines traditional knotting techniques with a focus on sustainability, using repurposed ropes sourced from local harbours. Lucy's work blurs the line between art and craft, exploring themes of time, patience and transformation.
