INTRODUCTION TO SOAP-MAKING
Release your inner creative on our Introduction to soap-making workshop run by Edinburgh designer-maker Jenny Smith of The Scottish Soapworks.
On this fun, one-day workshop, you will learn two soap-making processes: traditional cold process, and 'melt and pour'. The day begins with a background to the The Scottish Soapworks soap-making process. You will then learn about the properties of cold-process soap and selection of essential oils, and choose two recipes to make. Working as a group, you will learn about the cold process soap-making method, and prepare two logs of soap which will be left to cure for 3 weeks. Once your soap has cured, Jenny will cut and wrap it ready to post directly to you. Please allow up to 5 weeks for it to arrive.
After lunch, you will learn how to make 'melt and pour' organic glycerine soap, choosing a further two recipes to make and mould into shapes of your choice.. While your glycerine soap is hardening, you will select a range of embellishments and gift wrap form our craft table ready to decorate your soap.
Jenny has many years of experience in the soap industry, and those who are interested in setting up a soap-making business can attend her one or two-day business courses. These are offered on a one-to-one basis and cover soap-making, sourcing materials, labelling, licensing and more.
Refreshment breaks - featuring locally sourced products - are an important part of The Arienas Collective experience. We are fortunate to have a fantastic range of independent shops and producers nearby who we love to support. You will start the day with a welcome coffee served with a biscuits, and our buffet-style lunches feature summer platters or warming winter soup with bread and cheese. Our breaks allow time to socialise, make new friends, and chat to the artists.
Our artists will support you throughout the day offering one-to-one guidance and tips on design, as well as encouraging collaboration through sharing of ideas within the group. They will do their best to answer any questions you may have.
The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a supportive and welcoming home environment in the Edinburgh New Town. Spaces are limited so our artists can offer hands-on help and support. All equipment is provided, as are all the materials you will need. Just turn up, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in creating something unique.
The price for the day includes all materials, coffee, tea, lunch and of course you get to take all the products your have created home to enjoy and inspire you, or to give to family and friends as unique gifts.
Please note: The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a first-floor open plan reception room and unfortunately we do not have lift access. Please let us know of any skin or food allergies when booking.
